Kansas City Community Gardens is one of the only gardening organizations in the country dedicated to helping home gardeners have successful gardens. We help people grow food for themselves in backyards, vacant lots and at community garden sites.
KCCG is a garden membership organization. Home gardeners purchase memberships for either $2.00 or $12.00 depending on household income. Each membership includes 10 packs of seeds for free, a free bag of organic fertilizer and a subscription to our gardening newsletter. Additional seeds, vegetable plants, fertilizer and other garden supplies are available at a low cost to members.
KCCG membership applications are completed annually and are good from October 1- September 30 of each year. Memberships can be completed at our office in Swope Park. KCCG Members receive a membership card. This card is green for qualified low-income households, and yellow for those with our standard membership. Prices for some garden supplies vary depending on membership type.
We realize that for many of our members, having someone till their garden is the service that allows them to garden year after year. KCCG provides a tilling contractor to go to home gardens and till gardens at a low cost to our Green Card Members. Tilling applications are completed at the KCCG office and applicants must bring proof of income. Tilling is done on a first-come, first-served basis, so sign up early (even in the fall) to ensure your garden is tilled in time for spring planting.
Medium sized, front-tine tillers are available for rent to both Green and Yellow Card members at a low cost. Tillers can be rented for a morning (9:00am -12:30pm) an afternoon (1:00pm – 4:30pm) or an evening (pick up at 5:00pm and return by 9:00 the following morning). Call 816-931-3877 to reserve a time slot. A $50.00 deposit is required at time of pick-up and is returned when tiller is returned.
