We haven't started it yet. Jessica is a horticulture student at JCCC and we want to start off with herbs and then next spring maybe some vegetables. The garden will bring life and color to the existing landscape that is currently just grass and mostly a "big ash tray". Jessica needs to start the tilling process but we needed to get this application in first so we can rent a tiller from KCCG. Want to start as soon as possible. Thank you.
63rd Street Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 9400 East 63rd Street, Raytown, MO, 64133 The Raytown 63rd Street Community Garden was started in September 2012, with 4 children's educational plots donated by the KCCG, MU Extension Eating From the Garden Program, and the Raytown Main Street Association. Our first gardeners have been a group of Home School Children and their mothers. In 2013 the 63rd Street CG received a grant through the Jackson County Health Department to build and fill 24 raised beds and a 10'x10' garden shed. A grant was received in December 2013 from the Mid America Regional Council to build and fill an additional 12 raised beds, bringing the total of garden beds to 38, which completes our first phase for the garden. With 12 gardeners signed up and ready to begin planting in the 2014 gardening season, we are looking forward to getting more gardeners working in the remaining beds.

The garden ministry not only fed many in need in our area, but it also provided service opportunities for people to come out and help plant, water, harvest and distribute the produce. It provided a learning opportunity for many children in our community as they came and worked alongside their parents learning about where our food comes from, what is involved in growing our food, and how important it is to help our neighbors in need. In 2013 we were blessed to provide over 3,000 pounds of fresh produce to a local food pantry for distribution in our community, and in 2014 we were blessed to provide over 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to the same food pantry.

Beacon Hill Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 2901 Tracy Avenue, Kansas City, MO, 64109 The Beacon Hill community Garden has 20 raised beds, 2 peach trees, 2 apple trees and 1 cherry tree. The gardeners range in age from 18 to 82 years old. The garden is located in a "food desert", which makes it a valuable resource to members of the community. The garden serves as a place to fellowship and literally enjoy the fruits (or vegetables) of our labor by preparing scrumptious mouthwatering peach cobblers with peaches grown in the garden. Basil grown in the garden is used to make delicious spaghetti and pesto. The list of dishes prepared from the garden harvest goes on and on. We share our nutritious fruits and vegetables with members of the community, with special consideration given to the elderly members of our community. Many of the elderly members of our community are economically challenged and are grateful to members of the Beacon Hill Community Garden.

The students grow a variety of vegetables in eight raised beds, and have berry bushes around the perimeter of the garden. A grant from the BPU water department allowed the garden to get a water faucet on site, and has made watering the garden a much easier task for the students. Student volunteers work in the garden throughout the summer months and take home all the produce they harvest to share with their families.

Central Academy of Excellence SchoolyardGardens 3221 Indiana Ave, Kansas City, MO, 64128 Central Academy of Excellence science students started four raised-bed gardens in spring 2014. With their first harvest, students saw large yields of summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers, peppers, sweet potatoes and peanuts. Students tended the gardens through the summer months and science students harvested lots of produce when the regular school year started again. Peppers were a favorite among students. Most recently, students have planted and tended a wide variety of leafy greens, including kale, spinach, mustard greens, arugula and lettuce. Students have been surprised by the very different tastes produced by each of the greens. The garden has been used to discuss a wide variety of science and health topics with CAE students. It has also been a centerpiece to build pride in the Central community.

We have a beautiful garden area with 14 raised beds which will be maintained by the residents and the staff in the homes. We encourage healthy eating habits and feel the residents would benefit greatly from the fresh produce we will be able to provide. The ability of our residents vary greatly and all of the crops will be shared with everyone whether they are able to participate or not. We also have a small Memorial Garden that we will be trying to update with flowers so this can also be enjoyed by the residents and their families and those who have left us.

Additionally, they added two new beds for a couple of fourth grade classrooms to get their hands in the garden.

The garden allows the students a hand-on experience to learn science. Students learn about plant growth and seed germination in the classroom and are excited to see examples of it in the garden. Students also love to taste the harvest. Salad and salsa parties are a special treat for the students, and they take home extra produce to share with their families.

Now Lykins Garden has a hoop house, over 20 fruit trees, close to a 1/4 acre raspberry patch, a pergola with grape growing around it, an herb garden and a strawberry patch, a water source, over 40 raised beds and area for in ground planting. Lykins Gardens is always evolving. But our goal is to better our community and grow food and feed our community is constant.

After that time, members from the two churches plus some members from Rainbow Mennonite Church worked in the garden. The produce was used by the participants, Healthy Kids Club, and also sold to church members. The second year produce was sold on the lawn of Rosedale Congregational Church, and was also used by participants and Healthy Kids Club. This led to the start of the Rosedale Farmers Market where produce is currently sold. The money collected is donated to Healthy Kids Club at Rosedale Congregational Church and Children with Purpose at St. Paul AME Zion Church. Additionally, money has also been donated to Rosedale Development Association for supporting their efforts to encourage Rosedale residents to garden.

Even though the food pantry has an arrangement with Harvesters to acquire fresh produce, we want to supplement that with growing seasonal fresh product for our clients. Additionally, we wish to make available part of the community gardens for neighborhood residents who would like to raise some of their own fresh produce, but don't have the space. Also, there may be some who have never gardened before who would like to grow a garden and would be encouraged and helped by attending some gardening courses provided by KCCG and/or New Haven church members held on the church property.

Each year, we coordinate with the Kitchen Manager to grow those crops most needed by the kitchen to provide their guest a flavorful and nutritious meal. Also, we added a Giving Grove of 12 apple and pear trees as well as blackberries and raspberries last year and we look forward to adding fresh fruit to our deliveries in a few years.

We partened with Youth Build in the early stages. The installed the fencing and cut back the overgrowth. We have provided fresh vegetables not only for the members of our Neighborhood Group but for other persons who live in the vicinity of the garden. The location of our garden was once the worse eyesore in the block. We have an area where we have developed at the rear of the garden that is used for picnics and we have meetings in the summer at this location.

Truman Elementary SchoolyardGardens 9601 James A Reed Rd, Kansas City, MO, 64134 Our garden was established to teach children about the importance of healthy eating and how flowers and vegetables grow. The children enjoy watching the process of seeing how the seeds that they planted turn into flowers and vegetables. They are involved in helping with this process by weeding, watering and harvesting the vegetables. We have grown lettuce, greens, turnips and carrots. After the vegetables were harvested, the students, parents, and the community were allowed to pick vegetables from the garden. The children have also done landscaping by planting flowers in the front of our school. The children pulled up weeds, planted seeds, spread mulch and watered the flowers. The flowers help to beautify the front entrance of our school. Gardening is a good activity for our children not only are they having fun, but it is also a great way to incorporate science, reading and math. Our children have taken pride in knowing that this is something that they were a part of.
Truman Heritage Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 505 N. Dodgion St., Independence, MO, 64050 Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organizations that gives low income families a "hand up" by building homes for them to purchase at 0% interest plus sweat equity. Habitat and other agencies partnered to build a greenhouse, raised beds and added a berry patch. The Truman Heritage Community Garden serves the residents in the surrounding neighborhood including a HUD housing complex located next to Habitat. Volunteers from the garden are at the Independence Farmers Market on Saturdays May to October selling produce and helping people learn more about Habitat for Humanity,the Truman Heritage Garden and their partners like Kansas City Community Gardens and about gardening in general. Proceeds from the Farmers Market go to grow and sustain the Truman Heritage Garden. Produce not sold at the market goes to local food pantries and soup kitchens. The Truman Heritage community Garden carries on the mission of Habitat by giving people a "hand up" to eat healthier and less expensively by gardening.

University Academy SchoolyardGardens 6801 Holmes Rd, Kansas City, MO, 64131 University Academy middle school students use their eight raised beds to grow vegetables and have a hands-on learning tool for their science curriculum. Students grow a variety of greens each year, along with strawberries. The produce is harvested for tastings in the classroom and sent home with families and school staff.
Uplift Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 16919 Kentucky, Belton, MO, 64102 The garden is to help support the homeless on the streets of Kansas City. I grow hundreds of pounds of squash, zucchini, okra, egg plant, peppers and basil that is donated to food pantries and to ReStart Homeless Shelter. I plant 250 - 400 tomato plants and sell them $1.00 per pound and the money is donated to Uplift for serving the homeless.

WCC Community Outreach Garden Community Partner Gardens 1330 NE Delta School Road, Lees Summit, MO, 64064 Our garden was started by two high school students who gained knowledge about Community Gardens from their Sr. High Mission Trip to Denver. The mission of our garden is to connect people to Jesus Christ through the labor of hands of hearts, growing food to feed the hungry. Our produce is donated to Woods Chapel Church Grace Place (food pantry), to several local homeless shelters and to Harvesters.
Welcome Garden at Lee's Summit Christian Church Community Partner Gardens 800 NE Tudor Rd, LEES SUMMIT, MO, 64086 "The Welcome Garden" is managed by members of Lee's Summit Christian Church. The Garden provides fresh nutritious fruits and vegetables to local food banks. The Garden consists of 16 (4'x12') raised beds and approx 2,800 sf of communal growing space. Individual growers are encouraged to volunteer with the overall maintenance of the garden and to donate their excess harvests to our local food bank.

White Oak Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 136 White Oak Ave, Independence, MO, 64050 White Oak Community Garden is located on a city lot just off Independence Square. The City of Independence built the garden through a Community Block Grant to serve the low-income using the pantry at the Community Services League. This is a city-run garden through the Independence Health Department and serves the community who want to garden and have access to fresh produce.

The garden, run by LINC, allows interested students to work in the garden as garden club members. Woods Chapel Garden was started in order to provide easily accessible fresh vegetables to our residents as well as provide opportunities for socialization, exercise, and stress relief. Wyandotte Towers Community Garden Community Partner Gardens 915 Washington Blvd, Kansas City, KS, 66102 Although we have yet to agree upon a name, this garden will be constructed in the courtyard of the Public Housing Towers on 10th and Washington for the use of the tenants who are mostly senior and disabled persons. Our hope is to grow sustainable crops for the consumption of the residents, as well as teaching the canning of the produce for their consumption during winter months.
