Fifth graders at John Fiske Elementary in Kansas City, Kansas were eager to get their fall garden planted! On only their second day of the school year, three classrooms came out to weed their garden and prepare the soil for new plants and seeds.
Built in 2012 through Kansas City Community Gardens, the garden produces vegetables for students and staff throughout the year, and includes two additional fruit beds with thriving blackberry bushes.
This season, the fifth graders planted a bed of broccoli and cabbage transplants, grown in KCCG’s greenhouse. For the other raised beds, the students planted a variety of salad greens, carrots, beets, cilantro and snap peas all from seed. The students diligently covered their seeds with a sprinkling of soil. The school staff brought out the hose, and the students wrapped up by watering their garden beds!
