It’s that time of the year—time for lemonade and pool days and tomato plants and summer reading, but before school gets out for the summer, some schools are waiting until the last minute to get a big spring harvest!

We love working all around the Kansas City metro area with our 220+ daycare, elementary, middle and high schools. During this time of the year we have a lot of fun visiting our different schools and seeing how their gardens have grown. This year was an especially tough growing season with the late frosts and then the early hot spells. Still, our schoolyard gardeners worked hard to keep things growing and make do despite the weather.

With the spring weather that we had, we didn’t know what to expect with late spring harvests. We are happy to report that we have been seeing incredible looking kale plants, big healthy broccoli, plump sugar snap peas, tons of bright pink radishes, tasty spring onions and beautiful rainbow swiss chard!

Good work spring gardeners! We are proud of you for all your hard work, perseverance and dedication to the gardens even amidst the challenges brought on by the weather. We can’t wait to grow more cool season crops with you in the fall, but until then, happy end of the school year and all things summer related!
