Lesson Summary:
We share our backyards and gardens with birds who eat many different types of food including insects, berries, seeds, and nuts. Birds are excellent at foraging for their own food but feeders help to supplement their natural food sources. Today’s lesson, Do It Yourself: Pinecone Bird Feeder, is a fun and easy craft project that allows you to create a bird-friendly snack to share with your neighborhood feathered friends.
Creating this lesson inspired me to craft a bird feeder for my own backyard! Here are some pictures of my process…
First, I collected my supplies.
Next, I attached twine to a pinecone that I found during a neighborhood walk.
Then, I generously spread peanut butter over the pinecone.
Finally, I covered the peanut-buttered pinecone with bird seeds, and decided on just the right branch to hang it in my backyard.
Have fun making your own bird feeder and remember to take time to notice the birds that stop by for a TWEET!

- The Cornell Lab of Ornithology website is an incredible resource for discovering more about birds. I especially like referring to this site to identify birds by listening to recordings of their songs!
