March is almost here and that means KCCG is gearing up for spring! Staff and volunteers have been busy prepping for the 2022 garden season by packing seeds and planting seeds to grow in our greenhouse for the cool season plant sale.
Seeds, seed potatoes, and onion sets all go on sale on March 1st. Onion, leek, and shallot plants go on sale on March 11th. And cool season plants including asparagus, berries, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, kale and lettuce all go on sale on March 24th for Green Card members and March 25th for all card members.
If you have not signed up for a membership, now is a good time to do so! By signing up early, you’ll be able to save time when you come to pick up seeds and supplies.
According to Earlene Franks, KCCG's Front Office Manager, "Signing up early will make your visits to KCCG more efficient and get gardeners in on the very first items available. If you are eligible for the KCCG tilling service the earlier you get your order in the better chance of getting your garden tilled when you need it. Rental plot gardeners are called in on a 1st come 1st service basis from the waiting list. The earlier you get on the waiting list, the better chance you have of getting a garden plot this spring."
You can currently sign up online here or you can come in and sign up in person at our Swope Park location - 6917 Kensington Avenue, Kansas City, MO 64132.
Membership pricing is based on income and we offer three levels: Green for $2/year, Yellow for $12/year, and Blue for $25/year. With the membership fee, you receive access to free seeds and organic fertilizer along with access to the best gardening prices in town!
"For a very low membership fee, members receive 10 seed packets and access to additional seed packs at a low cost, as well as, access to tilling services, and resources to make your garden successful," says Franks. "Along with our modest membership prices, our vegetable plants are selected for gardeners in the KCMO metropolitan area to be successful. Plants are grown in KCCG greenhouse. When purchasing from a commercial site you are not always receiving plants/seeds that are specifically chosen for success in the KCMO region at a much higher cost."
