Our Schoolyard Gardens team partners with a number of school districts and agencies throughout the Kansas City area. It is our hope and goal to make schoolyard gardens as common as playgrounds and libraries at every school in the metro. With each school we work with we seek to expose the students to new and fresh vegetables. Our gardens bring students outside of the classroom, and challenges the students to try new things. From cultivating the soil, and planting seeds and transplants to weeding and watering the garden, each day the students spend in the garden brings them new challenges and new opportunities to learn. When students taste a new vegetable we have success!
This past Saturday, we helped celebrate KC Public Schools’ Back to School Block Party. In an event to introduce students and families to the new superintendent, and to gear up for the coming school year, over 6,000 students and families attended the block party this weekend. The Kansas City Public Schools district has been a valued partner since 2008. To date, 25 Kansas City Public schools have Schoolyard Gardens. The block party allowed us to introduce ourselves to the parents and the wider community. We were happy to connect parents to KCCG membership and gardening opportunities to provide fresh vegetables for their own families. The students were also able to show their parents the gardens they have grown at their own schools. Many thanks to Kansas City Public Schools and their hard work that went into this event.
We love working with students of the district and enjoyed meeting parents, grandparents and friends. We are looking forward to the upcoming school year and are excited to continue to grow with KC Public Schools and all of our enrolled schoolyard gardens. A Garden for Every School!
