Despite all this crazy weather, we’ve been busy all winter building new gardens at schools across the Kansas City metro! A few weeks ago, we built a garden with the students at Hawthorn Elementary and it was such a blast! We put together this short video so you can experience a garden construction along with us!
From unloading the truck, to constructing the beds, to shoveling the soil, you can follow along with the students every step of the way. The kids built 4 raised beds beside the school (two of them double-stacked!), which is 7 1/2 cubic yards of soil! That’s A LOT of soil. They worked super hard and did an amazing job.
In the video, you can also listen to an interview with Kate Guier, a K-3 Essential Skills teacher and the primary garden coordinator at Hawthorn Elementary. She shares her plan for the garden and why she decided to build a schoolyard garden at her school.
We also interviewed some of the students about what they’re excited to do in the garden and what they plan to do with the vegetables they grow! Check out the video to see what they say!
