KCCG is always looking for volunteers so we can continue to fulfill our mission to assist low-income families grow their own nutritious food!
We have a lot of volunteer opportunities coming up this winter and through next year and we'd love for you to join us.
Below is a look at some of the ways you can help. And you can visit our volunteer page for specific upcoming jobs that we need assistance with.
If you have any questions or are interested in any of these opportunities, email Rob at volunteer{at}kccg.org.
Seed Packaging & Labeling
Volunteers assist in putting labels on seed packets and filling packets from bulk containers. This typically occurs on Tuesdays and Thursdays from late fall into winter between 10am-2pm.
Greenhouse Plant Seeding
Volunteers plant seeds in trays of soil for transplants that will grow in our greenhouse. This also occurs on Tuesdays and Thursdays in late winter and early spring between 10am-2pm.
Community Garden Maintenance
We manage nine large community garden sites across the metro. Through the year, we have need of extra hands to help with maintenance projects at these gardens. Project dates are typically posted on our website.
Orchards Planting & Maintenance
Volunteers help install new community orchards in neighborhoods, schools, senior living facilities. There are also orchard maintenance opportunities such as weeding, pruning, harvesting, watering, and mulching. Plantings occur in April and mid October through December. Maintenance occurs from the Spring through the Fall.
Gardens Construction
Help us unload the van with lumber, wheelbarrows, shovels, hammers and nails. We’ll hammer the lumber together to make raised beds, shovel soil into wheelbarrows, and dump into beds. These constructions are located at community gardens and schoolyard gardens and can occur at anytime of the year.
Pack Orders
Volunteers weigh potatoes and pack seeds, onions and plants for School & Community Gardens. Each flat and bag gets labelled with the garden’s name. This occurs in the Spring from Monday through Friday during 9am-5pm at your convenience.
Schoolyard Gardens Assistant
These special volunteers must be able to commit on a continued basis to work with one of our schools, pre-school through high school. Must be able to commit to working with a local school on a weekly or bi-weekly basis during the school day or after-school programming time for a complete growing season (spring, summer, or fall).
We will connect each volunteer with a school that needs hands-on assistance in the garden and you will serve as a garden assistant to the schoolyard garden program coordinator at that site. Volunteer orientation is required for participation in several school districts. We will equip each volunteer with tools and supplies, but basic garden knowledge is necessary.
Children's Garden Maintenance & Cleanup
The Beanstalk Children's Garden is always evolving with the growing seasons and needs constant clean up with old plants being replaced by new plants. Volunteers are asked to help clear out plants and flowers, sweep debris, and pull weeds. This job begins in early spring through mid to late October and anytime at your convenience between 9am-5pm.
Retail Cashier
During our busy season in the spring, we open up an extra cashier to check people out for seeds and plants. This job consists of one 4 hour shift from 9am-1pm or 1pm-5pm from Monday through Friday. Volunteers can sign up for as many shifts as they would like.
Event Assistance
KCCG hosts two big events every September - our annual fundraiser, Gardens at Sunset, and the Fall Family Festival.
There are many jobs for both events. Help us on event day (both events take place on Saturdays), or with preparations in the weeks leading up to the events.
