Hello Schoolyard Gardeners!

We have been pretty quiet over here lately. Here’s what we have been up to: Taylor joined our team as an AmeriCorps service member (read more about her here) and we are so excited! We also had a big party to celebrate 10 years of Schoolyard Gardens in Kansas City. It was great to have so many of you out to celebrate with us. We are grateful to get to do this kind of work and can’t wait to see what the next 10 years bring #agardenforeveryschool!

The rest of our time has been spent at schools doing fall planting! Despite the hot, summery weather, it’s fall garden season at schools. Schools are enjoying a late summer harvest of cucumbers, green beans, tomatoes, peppers, and even some spring potatoes! Tomato and pepper plants will stay in the gardens and continue producing until the first frost.

We have officially sold out of all of our cool season plants in the greenhouse (things like broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale) but we still have a few lettuce plants left. For schools that are still wanting to plant a fall garden but are running a little bit late, you can still get a fall harvest by planting short season crops like spinach, radish, arugula, and lettuce.
