When Schoolyard Gardens first started in 2008, there were 20 schools listed in the program. Today, SYG has grown into a program that now provides low-cost seeds, plants and garden education to 210 schools!
With this amazing growth, we are always looking for volunteers to help schools that might need some extra support.
We are excited to announce that this spring we launched our official Schoolyard Gardens Seasonal Volunteer Program recruiting 7 Volunteers!
Volunteers attended the Volunteer Training Workshop held at our Swope Park office. Then, each volunteer was matched with a school that aligned with their preferred school location, age of students, and commitment level.
Volunteers met with the students for 10 weeks starting in mid-March, helping them plant, water, weed and harvest! (No experience is necessary, we’ll teach you everything you need to know!)

Last week, we were excited to celebrate the end of the season with a light lunch harvested from the Beanstalk Children’s Garden prepared by the SYG Staff for our spring seasonal volunteers.
The menu included homemade regular and buffalo hummus with crackers and carrots, pesto mozzarella toasts on Ibis Rosemary Polenta bread, kale salad with apples, almonds, cheddar and vinaigrette, mint sweet tea and homemade apple crisp!
It was so much fun hearing everyone’s garden success stories and swapping different ideas for a quick lesson in the garden.
We also discussed what problems they faced in the garden and came up with different ways to resolve these challenges.
