After the long winter, one thing I look forward to is reconnecting with our schools.
Instead of hosting the Schoolyard Garden’s pre-spring workshops we typically host in early March, last week the SYG team met with garden contacts via zoom and answered questions about planning the garden and ordering online.
It was a lot of fun to catch up and hear what everyone is growing and talk about the spring garden goals on their list!
Struggling to decide what to plant? Download Schoolyard Garden’s 6 Most Popular Spring Vegetables e- book.
It’s a quick reference guide on how to plant, care and harvest the 6 most popular vegetables that are planted in the Schoolyard Gardens’ community.
Lettuce: Planted from a transplant or scattered by seed, lettuce is always a hit tossed in a salad or used as a garden wrap with hummus and other garden veggies.
Green onions: Bulbs planted for green onions are the perfect size for the younger gardener’s hands still perfecting their fine motor skills.
Broccoli: A great lesson on patience, the broccoli floret takes a little longer to form (60days). Though the surprise on students faces is priceless when they see the green floret start to form.
Potatoes: Fun for gardeners of all ages, harvesting potatoes requires digging and looking for their potato treasures!
Carrots: Be sure to thin out seedlings to make room for the delicious carrot root. The thinned-out seedlings can be a microgreen treat! Not sure how to thin? Check out our How-to Thin video!
Sugar Snap Peas: No trellis? No problem! This variety of sweet pea does well without being trellised. Do not forget to try the crisp white blossoms too. They taste just like a sweet pea!
Call or email your Schoolyard Garden Coordinator if you have any questions about ordering for your garden. We are accepting order forms until March 26th .
Not seeing your order form in your inbox? Be sure your school’s enrollment form is up to date and your spring order form, sent from SYG{at}KCCG.org, isn’t in your trash or spam folder.
