Last week Luff Elementary Garden Club students got to show off their gardening experience to some very special visitors! Players from the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end team visited the students and helped them with a few gardening tasks.
This is the 5th year that the Chiefs have reached out to Kansas City Community Gardens to connect players to a local school. It is always exciting for us, because we select a school that goes above and beyond in their gardening efforts to reward them with this special prize!
Luff Elementary has more than earned this prize. The garden club meets once a month during Friday afternoons as well as every Monday after school. The club is made up of students from 3rd – 5th grade. The students voted as a club on what to plant in the garden and have been maintaining the garden this spring, since early March. Even with all this spring’s cold weather, the garden is still growing great!
Luff’s students did a great job not only showing the Chiefs players what is growing in the garden, but also how to properly plant seeds, how to water correctly and even taught the players a few things about why it’s important for students to eat vegetables. The players learned some great tips from the garden pros that day and even got their hands a little dirty and their feet a little wet helping take care of the garden.
Thank you to the Kansas City Chiefs for this continued partnership, and congratulations to Luff Elementary on maintaining an awesome Schoolyard Garden!
