Around this time of year, we get excited to highlight one of our awesome programs here at KCCG; The Leanna Flandermeyer Beanstalk Children’s Garden, more commonly called, the Beanstalk. This beautiful sensory garden is located at our headquarters in Swope Park and is a beloved fieldtrip destination for folks of all ages. We asked one of the wonderful Beanstalk Garden Assistants, Jeni, to tell us more about the Beanstalk and our annual Fall Family Festival event coming up this Saturday, September 17th.
Here’s what she had to say –
Tiny seeds lead to magical things at the Beanstalk Children’s Garden. Step inside for an adventure where you’ll not only see but taste, touch, and smell some growing plants. Come discover over 300 varieties of fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other plants that will arouse your curiosity.
The Beanstalk Children’s Garden is an urban oasis designed to engage your senses. You’ll explore where your food comes from and discover some tasty (and healthy) new favorites. Tantalize your taste buds as you wander throughout the 6 areas of the garden. Interact with plants as you taste seasonal fruits and vegetables. We have 5 varieties of radishes. There’s bound to be one you’ll like!
Just in time for cooler weather, come celebrate Fall in the Beanstalk Children’s Garden at our annual Fall Family Festival. Taste some of the yummy dishes prepared with our favorite garden treats. See how cotton and other fibers are blended together and spun to make yarn for the clothes you wear. Help us round up some of our garden enemies as part of the Bug patrol. Make fun crafts, play garden games, and much more! Fall Family Festival is September 17, 2022 from 10:00am to 2:30pm. Admission is FREE!
The Beanstalk Children’s Garden is open from June 1 to mid-October. Sign up for a tour and take home a sweet basil seedling. While visits to the Beanstalk are free, guided tours must be scheduled in advance at a cost of $2/person. Sign up for your tour at tours{at}kccg.org or 816-931-3877. We also offer advancement workshops for Girl Scouts and Scouts: BSA Saturdays throughout the summer. The Beanstalk is open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm.
Thanks so much for sharing Jeni! And thank you to the rest of the Beanstalk staff for making the garden such an amazing and beautiful place to visit.
Happy gardening and we’ll see you at Fall Family Festival!
