On November 19th of 2020, the Giving Grove program planted its 200th orchard in partnership with The City of Kansas City Missouri at Avenue of Life located in Kansas City, Missouri.
Avenue of Life mobilizes the community to equip and empower low-income individuals and families to be self-sustained and independent.
This 200th orchard was planted at their Business Training Center. They provide job training, career-development, discipleship, job-fairs, apprenticeships, internships, recycling jobs, mentoring, neighborhood beautification, and economic development at this center.
The orchard is part of a stormwater mitigation project with the KCMO water department. It has 40 trees, including apple, pear, Asian pear, bush cherry, and pecan varietals.
Avenue of Life will care for the orchard and distribute the organically-grown fruits and nuts to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
The trees will help absorb stormwater at the site for their expected lifetime of 50-60 years while producing more than 600,000 servings of free, organically-grown food.
KCCG’s work is made possible by many generous donors. Every dollar given can help a neighbor grow nearly $4 of healthy, fresh produce. Please consider a gift to support a garden or orchard in the coming year.
