Summary:
Today’s lesson, An Ant’s Perspective is appropriate for students of any age. Younger children will enjoy pretending to be an ant and exploring the garden, while older students will be able to think more critically about the complexity of taking on a different creature’s perspective. This activity encourages movement and is accessible for students with or without a garden. Beyond playing pretend, this activity helps students put themselves in another’s shoes and cultivate empathy and curiosity.
Additional Resources:
- Listen to the story Hey Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose.
This book invites the main character and readers to practice empathy and to think twice before squishing an ant.
- Make your own Ant Farm using mason jars, soil, a small piece of fabric, and ants & watch how ants tunnel through the soil.
This lesson can be easily adapted to have children take on the perspective of other animals like a dog, rabbit, roly poly, bee, etc. How does the environment look the same or different with these different perspectives?
