This time of year I can’t help but daydream about warmer weather and sunnier days out in the garden, with bright green sprouts popping up through the soil. It gets me excited to plan my garden, including brainstorming my garden goals for the year.
Prior to planning and ordering, we recommend you pause and check in with yourself and your gardening group, asking: what are our goals? Here are a few prompts to get you started:
- Why are you planting a garden?
- What do you hope to accomplish?
- What would a successful growing season look like for your school this year?
- Who do you hope to engage in the garden?
- Who will support the garden?
- What will you do with the produce?
Not sure where to begin? Many of our schools categorize their garden under one or more of these goals:
Cafeteria- Planning and planting a garden with the intent to harvest for snacks or meals prepped in the cafeteria.
Curriculum- Planting a garden as an extension of the classroom, promoting hands on learning and tying standards to garden maintenance practices.
Community- Growing a garden to increase access to healthy food while also engaging families, neighbors and/or other community members in the maintenance and harvesting of fresh vegetables.
