Mize Elementary dug in deep this Spring and reaped the benefits, with a bountiful harvest at the end of the school year! Their garden steward, Ms. Andrews, has been a superstar in her efforts to ensure gardening success.
She attended our Spring planting demonstration, here at KCCG, and took those lessons back to school. Not only did she teach kindergarteners and 5th graders how to plant and maintain a garden, but she also hosted a hands-on demonstration of her own to interested school faculty and staff.
It was all hands on deck in Winter, as the kiddos rallied together to help move soil into wheel barrels and then fill garden beds. Next, it was time to plant starters and sow seeds.
With adequate watering, weeding, and a little TLC – their endeavors proved to be all worthwhile. One warm spring day, everyone headed out to the garden to harvest the bounty of their efforts!
After collecting and cleaning their fresh garden produce, it was time to enjoy! Mize kiddos were able to sample everything they had grown during the season.
They set up a buffet and made garden veggie wraps! They even gave reviews on veggies they were trying for the first time using SYG’s Taste Test Evaluaton acivitity.
Keeping the momentum going, Mize is planting a summer garden, complete with tomatoes, peppers, and sweet potatoes that will be ready for harvesting when all the kids return to school in the fall. 😊
